I've never bought a pc in my life, always built them since the mid '90s :) Anyway, every time I try a repair install with my Win 7 pro iso I get some error (a few times about not being able to copy files or something, I can't seem to reproduce the same error each time. My last attempt just a few minutes ago looked like this https://i.imgur.com/RYYa8wO.png Of course, I've rebooted every time it fails, even do a full power reset.

t'Yep, I made one a couple hours ago. It doesn't find anything wrong with the startup.

I can boot into Windows 10 just fine. Actually, I'm going to test if I can get into Windows 10 safe mode now.

My other OS is Windows 10 (very problematic hates giving me permission to do anything normal  :sarcastic:). I'm also the Administrator on my system.

One other thing I discovered a while ago. I cannot change boot options in MsConfig

When I went to bed last night everything was good (always leave the pc on because I play music while I'm sleeping). When I woke up this morning my browser was acting weird, so I rebooted and other things started acting weird. So I wanted to get into safe mode to scan for root kits etc also to run full drive scans. (I used 4 different programs in case one doesn't do the job). Had to run the full scans and rootkit scans from my other OS drive instead. Also wanted to run Shanes AIO program in safe mode just in case it could fix what was wrong. Yes my backups are on 2 different hard drives, I alternate each month.

I have 6 drives if you include the dvd drive and it is a PAIN to get to the backs of the drives to disconnect them. Maybe I can disable them in the bios though MSI has the worst bios I've seen in years on a desktop system.

I ran the repair program in normal mode and made sure "Repair Windows Safe Mode" was checked. I even restored to a previous system backup via Macrium Reflect and even that backup (5 days ago--everything rosy when I made the backup) cannot get into safe mode. I've run SFC and came out error free.  Is it possible something hardware related is causing this? Thanks.

Well, after running several rootkit scanners, malwayrebytes spyware scanner, Comodos scanners and EmsisoftEmergencyKit (which fixed the most problems though nothing that seemed critical) I discovered that it was Restore Point Creator that was producing the message. So it wasn't something serious. The dev reported in April that he's no longer developing the program:

To keep supporting this program despite all of the issues that people have with System Restore I feel is a disservice to my users; they certainly deserve better.

I have fought with Microsoft System Restore for long enough and I’m just sick and tired of it. People have been reporting issues with System Restore not working for them and worst of all, System Restore not being able to restore a system back to a working state which makes System Restore completely unreliable for the purpose that it was made for.

At this point I recommend using Macrium Reflect, it’s a free solution for most people and will be guaranteed to be able to restore your system to a known working state. Yes, it takes a lot more effort than using System Restore since it requires you, the user, to create the disk images but it is far more reliable than System Restore and is 100% guaranteed to work every single time you need it to work.

I do have Reflect and use it a LOT. Thanks for the replies!

I have never seen this before. It happens every time I shutdown Windows and occasionally when I start up it will takes 5 minutes to finish loading and then this message will appear. SFC doesn't detect any errors. I even ran an in-place Windows "upgrade" to try and fix the missing component but the message still occurs. And of course I ran your AIO Repair. I have never seen this message before on any Windows installation and Google doesn't even show any results for it (no surprise there).  Really at my wits end here.  :confused: Any ideas, Shane? Thanks!

Oh, I've used in on Windows 10 before though this OS gave me endless problems with software all the time (won't let me start Process Lasso with Windows, for instance). I was hoping it got better which is why I installed it again.  :undecided: Shane actually made a new version in case the old one was incompatible. I'll have to hunt that one down. Thanks.

No problem. Not having major issue with port forwarding, just trying to avoid potential problem.  My modem gets really hot and I think that's causing my disconnects anyway.

Thought I use your program to set up my ports for Battlefield 4 but it doesn't support any modern game titles in the list. I tried to add it as custom but it seems to only allow 5 characters max at a time. BF4 requires the following: TCP: 80, 443, 9988, 17502, 20000-20100, 22990, 42127    UDP: 3659, 14000-14016, 22990-23006, 25200-25300. There's literally no way to add most of these in your program.  Is there a work around or any plan to tweak the software in the future? Thanks. :)

Funny thing just happened. I selected 12 updates (mostly Netframework), but upon installing my system decided to install 100 updates instead LOL Luckily neither of those troublesome updates are to be found either on my system or on the Windows update page. Guess they removed that garbage finally?

Started a few weeks ago. Thought maybe it was my Asus board going bad (I HATE Asus BTW). I also thought maybe vjoy (virtual joystick) may have done something. I kept going back and uninstalling software but nothing I targeted seemed to be it. There is some setting is all I can figure as I've restored 99% of my software this time and the problem doesn't reappear. About to reinstall my Nvidia drivers as well as my Corsair Link software (controls my water cooler) and hope they don't cause an issue. Wish me luck.

Yeah, I read about those before and I was wondering why one couldn't just remove those updates but no one seems to have mentioned going that route when I googled the issue.  I had also performed all of those dism commands you mentioned day before yesterday--usually fixes a LOT but not this time. I like that webpage you linked. I'm going to be going through it in a while as it looks interesting.

Anyway, I've already reinstalled windows. Luckily I had used Total Install to back up 99% of my programs, albeit some of them are missing their license registration when I restored them. BTW I found a program called RecImg Manager that makes it much, much easier (vs using the cmd prompt recimg stuff manually) to refresh Windows with most of the settings and programs intact, though it, too, was missing some registered license information and there were a few setting that didn't get restored properly. However, having used it to refresh my systems via the 45GB install.wim file Recimg created, my computer went back to taking several minutes to reboot. Hence the reason I've had to start from a completely new install and settle for restoring at least my software with Total Install.

Don't think I'll be touching Windows Update this time around until Windows 10 goes public at the end of the month.

Many times. SFC is unable to restore a couple files though (similar to "Cannot repair member file [l:66{33}]”telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json”) Tried following this http://thetechcookbook.com/windows-7-update-kb3022345-causing-corrupt-files/ but the zip file he offers is corrupt when I try to use it.  Frankly SFC /scannow never seems able to restore files in Windows 8.1 since I can remember just like it can't refresh a PC anymore. LOL Tried this also http://www.anandtech.com/show/5630/indepth-with-the-windows-8-consumer-preview/7  but Windows will not accept a custom directory (I want it to create the Wim on a separate hard drive i.e. I create a Refreshwim directory and using

Even if I just do it the default way i.e.

the refresh will fail even after using the Recimg /setcurrent command.

I'm just going to have to reinstall Windows again which I hate having to do.

If that doesn't fix the slow boot issue than I have to assume my Sata controllers are dying and the motherboard needs replacing (Asus has never responded to my tickets as they only care about the NEWEST products that they make so RMA is not an option with them).

Edit: Just as a test I tried refreshing again but it told me that the windows drive is locked. So then I tried "Remove everything and reinstall Windows" and it told me that a required partition was missing.   Using diskpart I confirmed that the drive is NOT read only. Thought it had something to do with NeoSmart EASYBCD but windows will not repair the startup either so no chance of letting it reinstate the original boot files. :omg:  I hope Windows 10 doesn't act like this (frankly I wan't to install that as a fresh install not as an upgrade just to avoid this kind of garbage.)

Instead of the usual 15 seconds or so it's taking closer to 2 minutes (sometimes over 5!) to boot into Windows. Been going on for a few weeks. Of course, I've tried Shane's repair program.
 
I have a Silicon Power 240GB S60 SSD Drive (better than anything I've ever owned) and just in case I've refreshed it, low

level formatted and even used HDD Regenerator (no errors found as expected), changed sata cables, etc.  So I know it isn't

the hard drive. I've reset all bios settings to default, switched back and forth between IDE and AHCI modes, and even

deleted and recreated the partition twice. I reflashed my bios as well. I also restored a backup (macrium reflect) from

prior to the issue.

Here is a list of my startups (I've had MUCH more enabled without this issue though):

Trying not to lose my software or settings but just in case tried refreshing the system. However, Windows 8's refresh

function  has NEVER worked as it fails no matter if I do it directly from inside Windows or from

the installation media. So no surprise that it didn't work this time either.

My Windows 7 installation boots normally albeit it's installed on a spinner hard drive.

Well, apparently if I installed Windows 8 with my linked account the darn thing wouldn't work because apparently MS's synch settings had some flaw (reinstalled 5 times!). So I reinstalled again but created a whole new account and it's working in Windows 8 now. But with the same configuration of hardware and "tweaks" in Windows 7 Pro it just gives me that blank cmd window LOL.  :tongue: :undecided: :shocked: :rolleyes: :omg:

I have the same OS (Win 8.1 Pro) installed on a regular hard drive on this same system. It runs fine on that one even though it's been tweaked, over-loaded with software and isn't up to date:  but doesn't work in in this fresh up to date version installed on my SSD. So I'm including the DXDIAG from the Win 8.1 Pro it DOES work in.  Maybe you can compare it to the other one I uploaded on my last post and spot something fundamentally different, even though they're the same OS.  In your own time, of course. Don't mean to hog your attention.  :shy:

Getting a blank cmd window. This thing worked fine last month now it doesn't work even on a new install of Windows? I am cursed.  :evil: Even tried turning off DEP. Including a DXDIAG file just in case. Thanks for your time, Shane. It's tedious, I know.

Here you go. Win 8.1 is being crazier than I remembered. For one thing it won't let me verify my identity (button does nothing) nor switch to a local account. If it wasn't so much faster than Win 7....  :rolleyes:

I understand. Ran the AIO repair again, also included Repair Reparse Points and Environmental Variables. Also checked off "Inlcude .Cat Files" box (no idea what it's for). BTW I clicked  the Create a System Restore Point but it didn't work though I can do it the normal way in Windows, so I think something got borked in that setting.

Guess somewhere someone has run into the same issue with a particular cmd file though Google now omits tons of results for queries that I know for a fact exist but now produce no results. Suck it, Google!  :angry:

Hi, ironically that option is grayed out I'm afraid. All other bat files on my computer have it grayed out at well. I'm going to try to add it manually to the registry. Will report back. BTW do place it in
